JFK ATTENDS MR. SAM’S FUNERAL IN TEXAS



Bonham, Texas (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy attended the funeral & graveside services of Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn today.


Sam Rayburn served 17 years as Speaker, the longest tenure in U.S. history.


The service was held at the First Baptist Church of Bonham.

Earlier in the day, JFK attended an event in Arizona honoring 84 year old Senator Carl Hayden.


Senator Hayden, known as “the father of Grand Coulee Dam,” has a long record of support for public lands, mining & other issues important to the West.

The President will finish up his long day in Hollywood where he will attend a dinner given in his honor by the Southern California Democratic Committee.


The dinner will be held at the Palladium & is to feature Frank Sinatra & Nat King Cole.

JFK INAUGURATES DULLES INTERNATIONAL

Chantilly, Virginia (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy inaugurated Dulles International Airport today.


Dulles, named in honor of former President Eisenhower’s Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, is the 1st airport in the nation designed for commercial jets.


The airport is located 26 miles from downtown Washington, D.C. & sits on a 10,000 acre site.


The main terminal of Dulles is adorned with a white, concave roof which rises high on one end.  


The President called the new airport “a distinct ornament of a great country & a great governmental system.”


JFK added:


“This building, I think, symbolizes the aspirations of the United States in the 1950s & 1960s”.*


*JFK+50 included a brief article on Dulles in one of our 1st postings a year ago, but since that time we made our 1st visit to Dulles & made photos.  Thus, we want to update the posting from last year.

JFK ENJOYS WEEKEND AT PALM BEACH

West Palm Beach, Florida (JFK+50) President Kennedy has enjoyed a restful weekend at the family home here in West Palm Beach.


The President began his day by attending mass at St. Ann’s Church.


Later in the day, he signed a bill creating the Coastal Engineering Research Center.


The center will study near-shore oceanography as it relates to engineering issues & will serve as a clearing house for water resources projects for the Army Corps of Engineers.

SCHWARZENEGGER SWORN IN AS GOVERNOR


Sacramento, California (JFK+50) Austrian born body builder & actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was sworn in today as the 38th governor of the state of California.

Schwarzenegger defeated Governor Gray Davis in a special recall election on October 7.


Schwarzenegger was born in 1947 & became Mr. Universe at the age of 20.


He came to the United States in 1968 & became an American citizen in 1983.


Schwarzenegger began a career in Hollywood with the film “Conan the Barbarian”.


In 1986, Schwarzenegger, who is a Republican, married television reporter Maria Shriver who is JFK’s niece & a Democrat.*


*On our recent trip to Washington, D.C. our waiter at Billy Martin’s Tavern in Georgetown told us that he had waited on the Governor & Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger.

KINGSTON TRIO’S “TOM DOOLEY” IS #1


“Hang down your head Tom Dooley
 Hang down your head & cry
 Hang down your head Tom Dooley
 Poor boy you’re bound to die.”


New York City (JFK+50) The folk song “Tom Dooley” performed by the Kingston Trio reached #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts today.


The song, which has been around since the 1860s, is about a North Carolina man named Tom Dula who was hanged for the murder of his fiance.*


*The Kingston Trio was very popular in the early 1960s.  I was part of a local folk group which we patterned after the K.T.  We called ourselves “The Greenbrier Trio”.
