JUNE 7-11 2012*

Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we conclude our report of Chapter 8 of the book by Kenneth P. O’Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy.  It is published by Little, Brown & Company.

The title of Chapter 8 is THE BIG ONE.

Kenneth O’Donnell discusses “the real turning point in the campaign”…the televised face to face debates between JFK & Richard Nixon.

One of the effects of JFK’s success in the 1st debate is evidenced by the story Kenny tells about Senator Frank Lausche of Ohio.

Senator Lausche had refused to appear with JFK at a public event in Cleveland the day before the debate, but the day after he was waiting outside JFK’s motel room at 7:30 a.m. wanting “to travel through the state” with him.

Kenny writes that JFK’s distaste for Nixon came across during the televised debates & that it “did not stem from the differences in their political views.”

Money started rolling in to the KENNEDY FOR PRESIDENT campaign AFTER that 1st debate.

Kenny tells us that JFK won 7 of the 9 BIG STATES “where he made his main drive.”  He barely lost California & also lost Ohio. JFK won Illinois but only by 8,853 votes.

On the morning following ELECTION DAY, at 7 a.m., secret service agents were posted around the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port.

JOHN F. KENNEDY had been elected 35th President of the United States.

*JFK+50 will be taking a 4 day vacation starting tomorrow.  Please check back on June 12 as we begin our report on Chapter 9 of “Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye” titled ‘FORMING A GOVERNMENT”.
