FORMING A GOVERNMENT I

Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we begin our report of Chapter 9 of the book by Kenneth P. O’Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy.  It is published by Little, Brown & Company.

The title of Chapter 9 is FORMING A GOVERNMENT.

Kenneth O’Donnell tells us that shortly after Senator Kennedy publicly acknowledged his victory, he (Kenny) was visited by 2 Secret Service agents.

The agents informed Kenny that JFK had told them that the Secret Service detail would be under his direction.*

*Kenny would be special assistant to the President & as appointment’s secretary would be responsible for his daily schedule of work & appointments.

Kenny says that he would spend at least half of his time before the inauguration dealing with  the FBI & Secret Service on security clearances for those who would be joining the new administration.

A conflict between the President-elect & Secret Service began almost immediately when at Palm Beach JFK “took a running dive into the ocean & swam out beyond the breaking waves.”

One of the agents told Kenny:

“We can’t have (JFK) swimming out there alone.”

From then on a Coast Guard cutter patrolled the waters in front of Ambassador Kennedy’s residence.

Irritated about this, JFK said to Kenny:

“Are they expecting (Fidel) Castro to invade Palm Beach?”
