VOTERS KNOW DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS BEST
Durham, North Carolina* (JFK+50) The Carolina Times today reports John S. Stuart, a long time member of the Durham Commission on Negro Affairs, said:
“Negroes know that as a minority group the Democratic party has supported & passed bills for the benefit of the masses.”
The statement follows the victory by the KENNEDY-JOHNSON ticket in last Tuesday’s presidential election & also the overwhelming support of both national & local Democratic candidates by African-American voters.**
The Times report also said Negro support for Democrats in Durham County came despite the visit of baseball great Jackie Robinson who is now an executive of the Republican Party.
*Durham, N.C. is the 5th largest city in North Carolina & the home of Duke University. It was originally called Durham Station & grew because of the tobacco industry.
The 1st sit-in of the Civil Rights Movement occurred in Durham on June 23, 1957. Martin Luther King, Jr. coined the phrase ‘Fill up the jails!’ here.
**72% of Black voters in Durham County favored JFK & local Democratic candidates.
