THE BIG ONE I

Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we begin our report of Chapter 8 of the book by Kenneth P. O’Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy.  It is published by Little, Brown & Company.

The title of Chapter 8 is THE BIG ONE.

Kenneth O’Donnell writes that once back in Massachusetts, JFK & his family enjoyed a couple of days rest at Hyannis Port.

Less than 2 weeks later, JFK was watching the Republicans nominate Richard M. Nixon.  As he watched on television, he said:

“If I have…(to) wave my arms over my head like that in order to become President of the United States, I’ll never make it.”

Soon JFK was attending to “fence-mending chores” within his own party by making peace with former President Harry S Truman* & former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.**

After the visit with Mrs. Roosevelt, Dave Powers, who accompanied JFK, was asked how the Senator had gotten along with the “1st Lady of the Party.”

Dave responded:

“The Senator came out of there like a boy who has just made a good confession.  It was a great load off his mind.”

*Mr. Truman, during the campaign for the nomination, had gone public with his disapproval of Jack Kennedy as the party nominee for President.  He said that he was too young & inexperienced.

**Mrs. Roosevelt had supported Adlai Stevenson.
